'Flora of Louisiana' by Margaret Stones
'Flora of Louisiana' by Margaret Stones
Acknowledged as one of the most accomplished botanical artists of the twentieth century, Elsie Margaret Stones (b.1920) was an Australian botanical illustrator and principal artist for Curtis’s Botanical Magazine for Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
In 1975, Louisiana State University commissioned Stones to record a series of native Louisiana plants. Over fourteen years the project expanded, and Stones created over 200 illustrations and watercolours detailing some flora that have never been captured before.
In 1991, Stones exhibited 90 drawings at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, alongside the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
Stones was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) as recognition to her service to art as an illustrator of botanical specimens.
